Blue cod rules in the Marlborough Sounds

The Marlborough Sounds is included in the Tasman blue-cod area. Measure fish before deciding to keep them and check the current Fisheries New Zealand Challenger rules before departure.

At a glance

Minimum legal size 33 cm and maximum 2 blue cod per fisher each day, combined across the Marlborough Sounds and Challenger East. Measure each fish before deciding to keep it.

Closed season

No blue cod may be taken in the Marlborough Sounds from 1 September through 10 January inclusive.

Maud Island

The marked closed area around Maud Island is no-take throughout the year. Use the current Fisheries New Zealand map to confirm its boundaries.

Filleting and possession

Blue cod cannot be filleted at sea unless eaten immediately. Any fish eaten still counts toward the fisher’s daily limit.
