Blue cod rules in the Marlborough Sounds are stricter than in some neighbouring waters. Location matters, including when transporting fish through the Sounds. Information status: 30 July 2026
Closed season
No blue cod may be taken in the Marlborough Sounds from 1 September through 10 January.
Filleting and possession
Blue cod cannot be filleted at sea unless eaten immediately. Any fish eaten still counts toward the fisher’s daily limit.
